Citizen Caliber 0100 to Debut Three New Watches

Having made its debut more than 40 years ago, the Citizen watch company’s Eco-Drive changed the watch world and timekeeping technology. The Eco-Drive utilized an innovative method of using light to recharge the batteries of the watch – a distinct charging method compared to the dominant quartz movements of the era. Citizen Eco-Drive caliber watches not only introduced innovative battery-charging systems, but also convenient and cost-efficient battery replacement service. Clients and industry analysts also noted the watches’ value to the environment via battery disposal. Citizen is now introducing the Caliber 0100, which calibrates time to an accuracy of +/- 1 second per year. The 0100 is expected to see three new models available in limited quantities in the fall.

Citizen attributes the high accuracy of the Caliber 0100 to new AT cut type crystal oscillators vibrating at a frequency of 8.4 MHz, an alternative to using synchronized data from satellites or atomic clocks. The frequency of the new oscillators represents a 250x improvement to that of the Multi-Band 6 Atomic Timekeeping technology used in Casio models. Citizen has also equipped the new series of watches with innovative power-saving materials and designs that make the mechanism powering the watch resilient to elements such as temperature, gravity, and age. The Caliber 0100 provides six months of operation on a single charge – or eight months in power-save mode. The engineers have also built the watch to automatically adjust for frequency and changes in temperature.
