The History of G-Shock as the World’s Toughest Watch
More than two years ago, Gunness World Records tested the durability of a Casio G-Shock by having it driven over by a 24.97-ton dump truck. The test was to verify the claim of G-Shock being the world’s toughest watch.
The truck managed to give the G-Shock DW5600E-1 model a fight, but the watch continued to operate, with its dials still ticking. This established a new world record for the heaviest vehicle to drive over a watch without damage.
The test wasn’t part the actual vision of G-Shock founder Kikuo Ibe when he initially developed the first watch for Casio more than 35 years ago. Over 200 prototypes were developed before the original G-Shock made its debut in 1983.
After Ibe broke a watch given by his father, the original G-Shock was developed with a process that was concentrated on ensuring its strength and durability even amidst the toughest conditions.
