Most Expensive Wristwatch Auctioned Goes for $17.8 Million

On Thursday, the most expensive watch auctioned has just exchanged owners. A bidder agreed to buy the Rolex Daytona that was formerly owned by actor Paul Newman for $17.8 million. This purchase sets a new world record for a wristwatch sold at auction. The record was verified by New York auction house Phillips. The watch was originally owned by Newman and given by his wife Joanne Woodward around the time of the filming of this movie, “Winning”. After its initial appearance, demand for it has exploded.

“Demand skyrocketed for all models of Daytona, making it perhaps the most widely sought after collectors’ watch up to the present day,” Phillips said.
