First Carbon Watch from Longines Set to Debut
Longines is making waves in watchmaking history yet again with the debut of its first-ever carbon case watch. Building on its legacy of innovation, the Swiss brand is reimagining the iconic Ultra-Chron model, originally introduced in 1968 as the first diver’s watch with a high-frequency movement. This latest release combines heritage design with modern materials for a lightweight yet robust timepiece.
Durability and Lightness
The new Ultra-Chron is crafted from carbon, a material celebrated for its exceptional durability and lightness. Weighing just 80 grams for both the case and strap, it offers unparalleled comfort without sacrificing strength. Measuring 43mm in diameter and 14mm thick, the carbon case is just slightly larger than its stainless steel predecessor.
Despite its ultra-lightweight build, the watch retains the robust water resistance of the steel version, capable of withstanding depths of 300 meters. This is achieved through features like a titanium screw-down crown, ensuring its suitability for professional diving.
Timelab Chronometer-Certified Movement
Aesthetically, the Ultra-Chron takes on a sleek, modern appearance. Its sandblasted anthracite dial features darkened applied indices and hands, creating a stealthy and futuristic vibe. The titanium caseback houses the Timelab chronometer-certified L836.6 movement, an exclusive to Longines. Equipped with a silicon balance-spring for enhanced precision, the movement offers a 52-hour power reserve.
This carbon iteration of the Ultra-Chron continues Longines’ tradition of blending innovation with timeless design. As the brand’s first foray into carbon watchmaking, the model is poised to attract both collectors and enthusiasts who value cutting-edge materials and performance. With its bold design and advanced features, the carbon Ultra-Chron sets a new benchmark for modern dive watches.
